La Jolla's Sushi Boat Brings Folks Food & Fun

Sushi Boat is San Diego's newest Japanese eatery.

When one visits the upscale, seaside San Diego community of La Jolla, there are so many options for where to dine.

Seafood is certainly the most common cuisine, and what better place to enjoy the raw with rice than a sushi bar, like Sushi Boat.

Upon walking into Sushi Boat, one is immediately greeted by the welcoming hospitality so characteristic of Japan. The hosts and hostesses gingerly bow and invite guests to be seated. Table availability is usually fair to good, since the restaurant is still very new. Yet the treat at Sushi Boat is to sit around the bar itself.

Revolving Sushi Bar

If your party is two to four people, then enjoying each other's company at the bar is simple. If you want to invite more people, for instance your office staff, social club or aerobics class, you'll find that many different conversations will ensue, as the six-sided bar can accommodate around 30. You'll all be forming a ring, though not a perfect circle!

Then comes the food. There is no waiting for it at Sushi Boat's bar. Individual little plates with two to five pieces of all kinds of sushi revolve around the bar on a conveyer belt-like rotator. You watch the carousel action from your seat. The selection is exceptional. Everything from the Philly roll, to crunchy rolls (with a deep-fried coating), to veggie rolls, to tempura sushi passes by you. Loaded with cream cheese and fresh vegetables, the Philly roll is a delectable favorite. Some versions of the crunchy roll have a special southwest sauce inside...another super suggestion. Each plate is covered by a see-through plastic lid to keep in the fresh taste. Anything you want, just take.

The plates are each color-coded with a different ring around the rim. A yellow plate is the cheapest; under two dollars for one. The red, green, and blue are each a little more.

Waiters and waitresses will of course make their rounds while you're there. They ask you what you'd like to wash the Asian delight down with. Sushi Boat has a wide array of Japanese beers and wines, as well as soda, juice, water and much more.

Ice Cream Cubes

If there's room for dessert, one suggestion is the creamy, rich, Toshi ice cream cubes they offer. Wrapped in what tastes like a very soft tortilla-like holder, these bite size cream cubes come in a slew of different flavors. There's your usual vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, yet also green tea, coffee and many others found mainly in Japan.

The average patron will spend anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour at Sushi Boat and should be able to keep his or her personal tab under 20 dollars, depending on level of hunger. One might say it's a place to go for food, folks and fun. If you're in the La Jolla or general San Diego area, you might find Sushi Boat to be a treat. They're located at 2161 Avenida De La Playa, in La Jolla. Sushi Boat is open for lunch and dinner, most days opening their doors at 11:30 a.m.

It's one way to float your boat in San Diego.
